Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that is found in the gastric mucous layer or adherent to the epithelial lining of the stomach. It is a common cause of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Its route of transmission remains unknown but current data suggests a faecal-oral route. The organism’s urease enzyme, motility and ability to adhere to gastric epithelium are factors that enable the organism to survive and proliferate in the gastric milieu.
